United Arab Emirates Policies Affecting Disinformation

From ADTAC Disinformation Inventory

Legislation

There are three laws which address transparency and misinformation on social media: 1. Federal Law No. 5 of 2012, 2. Federal Law No. 12 of 2016, and 3. the Electronic Media Regulation of 2018. Violators of these laws have gone to court. Government authorities have also blocked accounts and posts with misinformation, begun a public awareness campaign and have created a course to teach students about online misinformation.[1]

In April 2020, the UAE announced it would fine individuals who disseminated medical content that contradicted official statements up to 20,000 dirhams.[2]
