National Policies Affecting Disinformation
The Range of Policies
Governments around the world have taken steps to make disinformation less readily accessible online. However there are determinants which explain the wide variety of policies and approaches:
- Some governments have taken extreme and controversial measures against disinformation including internet shutdowns and censorship. Many policies said to be against disinformation in fact target government critics and dissenters.
- Other governments have more balanced policies which work to guarantee net neutrality and freedom.
- Some governments haven't taken any steps against online disinformation as they do not view it as a problem. Governments face a challenge in countering disinformation as actions taken against disinformation can restrict free speech, so they do not act and leave civil society to address disinformation.
