Vietnam Policies Affecting Disinformation

In Vietnam the Cyber Security Law makes it so that tech companies like Facebook and Google must supply user information and delete content at the government’s request. There is a pre-existing law which makes it so that individuals viewed as spreading disinformation can be sent to prison for attempting to undermine state security.

In April 2020, a decree took effect which imposes a fine of 10-20 million dong ($426-$853), on individuals who use social media to share information deemed false, untruthful, distorted, or slanderous information. Hundreds of people have already been fined for spreading "fake news" about COVID-19. These laws were passed under the guise of stopping COVID-19 disinformation, but they cover more than just pandemic related content.
