Sweden Policies Affecting Disinformation

From ADTAC Disinformation Inventory

Legislation

The Swedish government allows for private entities to block content online but has not itself adopted legislation to enable the government to block sites. The Swedish government criminalized spreading false information and mandates that news media outlets correct false information.[1]

Actions and Initiatives

The Swedish government has set up the Psychological Defense Agency which will launch in 2022 and will focus on combating disinformation in Sweden. Previously the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency was tasked with informing Swedish citizens about misinformation campaigns and how to detect them.[2][3]

During the 2018 election cycle Swedish public media corporations launched a fact checking website and Facebook actively deleted posts flagged as false. Some bots were identified but there were no successful misinformation campaigns.[4]
