Russia Policies Affecting Disinformation
From ADTAC Disinformation Inventory
Legislation
In 2019 Russian lawmakers passed a bill that punishes online media organizations and journalists for spreading "fake news". This bill includes punishment for disrespecting authorities, such as President Vladimir Putin.[1]
The spreading of banned information is punishable by fines and administrative detention. Russian media outlets have been critical of anti-disinformation legislation, which they view as overly restrictive.[2]
During COVID-19 Russia approved fines of $25,000 as well as prison terms of up to fives years for individuals found to be spreading false information.[3]
