There is no censorship of online content and as of 2020 the internet penetration rate was 82%.[1][2] The constitution provides for freedom of speech and journalists are able to openly criticize politicians.[3] According to the 2021 World Press Freedom Index Georgia is ranked 60 out of 180 countries.[4]

Re-leaked audio from 2019 appears during 2021 political crisis

During a political crisis in 2021 audio which was damaging to a Georgian politician was re-leaked without contextual information that it was from 2019. The outlet which generated the leak POSTV is a known disseminator of disinformation. The leak was not tampered with and contains a conversation with Georgian leader of the Democratic Movement Party Nino Burjanadze and Konstantin Kosachev the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federal Council of the Russian Federation. The leak was posted at a similar time by several outlets which suggests coordinated behavior however this cannot be definitively proved.
